PROGRAM
David Long is a biologist with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.  His program was about the recent discovery of the Ivory Billed Woodpecker (not peckerwood) in the Cache River National Wildlife Refuge near Brinkley. (Why is it Cash, Arkansas,...and the Cache River?...same river...huh?)   The IBWO has not been seen in some 60 years since its sighting within the last year.  (He had Rip Van Winkle beat) Paul Holmes stated that he was present when the IBWO was last spotted in the 1930's-40's.
The Pileated Woodpecker is often mistaken for the IBWO but there is more white on the IBWO.  Gene Sparling saw the woodpecker and mentioned it on a chat line.  2 persons from Cornell University came to search and following the report many, many others flocked to the CRNWR to search.  20,000 hours have been spent to further search for the IBWO and on 2/11/04, two more persons saw the woodpecker and then again in April and June and again in February of this year.  All total, there have been 16 sightings by 18 persons.  Auditory evidence is being studied presently with 18,000 hours recorded. There is a 4-second video of the bird.  It is 18" in length and sports a 30" wing span.  Acoustics have proven that the IBWO exists and is present in the Cache River Basin.  What is Next?  Authorities must control the tourism in the area and prevent the excited bird watchers from over-loving the bird.  It will be extinct again!  Pr! obably, permits limited to 5 persons per day, will be issued.
