Bobbi Fowler represented the Women’s Crisis Center. Married to Chris.
Northeast Arkansas Council on Family Violence changed their name a year ago. They are more all-encompassing and the name change is representative of this.
The Women’s Crisis Center cover 6-County area and will possibly add the 7th. There is a 24-hour a day crisis line that operates 7 days a week. It is staffed by paid staff members. Counseling is offered over the phone and in person. There are referrals to food, shelter, legal counseling and so forth. Educational services are offered to community groups and to the school system.
Domestic violence is the number one health risk to women today. Fifty percent of all murders of women are by partners or former partners. Seventy five percent of murders occur after the victim has left.
Ten million children per year see their mother’s get assaulted. The center has a role to play with regard to children.
Arkansas ranked #3 in the nation with regard to caucasian women murders.
Over 2,250 crisis calls and 267 women and children sheltered last year. The shelter can accommodate 20-23 people at a time.
There is a need for additional funding. They are working on a Reynolds Grant, but must come up with 20% match to what they are able to receive.
