Rotary Roundup

The Weekly Newsletter of the Rotary Club of Jonesboro-University
Jonesboro, Arkansas - July 14, 2005

Prayer: Rusty Clark
Pledge: Glenn Bowers

This week's speaker was Mickey Dement, this year's Craighead County Farm Family of the Year recipient. Mickey told us about the life he and his family lead on the farm. He discussed how farming has changed over the years. Mickey farms with Charlotte, his wife of 27 years. They have three children. They have an 800-acre rice and soybean farm near Bono. He also discussed some of the challenges faced by farmers today, with the major problem at the moment being the high cost of fuel. Mickey gave his views on challenges that will be faced by farmers in the near future. Fifty years from now the greatest challenge will involve water. With water tables continually dropping, water conservation is becoming a necessity.

Awards

Immediate past-president Jay Clevenger handed out some awards that he was unable to give at the Year-End Banquet. Debra Taylor received her 2-year perfect attendance pin. Jim Steele also received a 2-year perfect attendance pin and recognition for his efforts as the 'Buttmeister' at last year's Boston Butts. Lee Simpson was recognized for chairing the Social Committee and Brian Gibson for chairing the Pot O'Gold Clean-up Committee

Good News

Josh Fletcher reported that he is happy to be back from the 'vacation from hell'. Nothing went right.

Jay Clevenger reported on why Chris Blanchard's family had to leave town suddenly. They were concerned about a friend who was in London during the bombings. They enjoyed their visit to our club and appreciated our thoughfulness.
