Rotary Roundup

The Weekly Newsletter of the Rotary Club of Jonesboro-University
Jonesboro, Arkansas - July 7, 2005

Prayer: Jay Clevenger
Pledge: Glenn Bowers

This weeks speaker was Jason Holden, manager of Telecom Services with Ritter Communications. Jason told us about Internet related issues such as SPAM, AdWare, and SpyWare. He explained what he was and offered ideas on how to protect yourself against them. All three issues result in lost time and productivity. Dealing with these problems requires time and money.

Spam is defined as 'unsolicited commercial e-mails' and its impact is growing daily. Every time you log onto a public website you expose yourself to the chance to receive more SPAM. If you log onto any public newsgroup, there is the chance that your e-mail address will be captured and sold to a 'spammer'. Jason advised to carefully read any website's privacy statement before you ever provide your e-mail address. Also, you need to be aware of any unecpected pages requesting your e-mail address, even if they look like a Windows Operating System. Most are not legitimate.

In order to minimize risk, you might consider having multiple e-mail address, such as one for business purposes and one for personal use. Only give your personal address to select individuals. He also recommended that you use some type of filter program and keep it updated.

Jason then discussed AdWare and SpyWare. AdWare is unsolicited advertisement software. This is a major source of the dreaded 'pop-up' window. SpyWare is more dangerous. This is software that retrieves personal information from your computer, including passwords, computer features, most-visited websites, etc. This information is sent without your permission and knowledge.
