Sheila introduced Anna Kaloghirou and her mother ?; Anna is a senior at JHS, where she is involved in basketball, soccer, National Honor Society, Beta Club, and an organization interested in medical careers.

 

Debbie introduced Andrea Montgomery and her dad Tim; Andrea goes to Brookland, where she is vice-president of her class, involved with the FBLA and March of Dimes.  Andrea is also a nanny.

Announcements

 

Rusty read a letter of appreciation from Gary Curry of the Heartland ProAm Tour.  Gary expressed his gratitude to the club for a successful event and looks forward to 2007.

 

Jay Clevenger announced that several members need to pick up their copies of autographed books from the golf tournament.   

 

Jake and June Morse were in Seattle last week to accept the National Parks and Recreation Association’s 2006 National Humanitarian Award.  They accepted the award on behalf of the three Jonesboro Rotary Clubs that raised over $750,000 to construct the Rotary Centennial Park. 

 

Bob Holloway announced that the 28th Miracle Rodeo will be on Saturday, October 28th.  Volunteers are needed between noon and 4:30pm.  Please contact Bob, Margaret, or Sherry Carter if you’d like to help.

Rusty confessed that he overlooked his wedding anniversary, but he and Linda did celebrate 30 years of marriage this past week. 

 

Dave Davison congratulated Lindsay Harmon on her recent wedding and trip to Hawaii

 

Greg Phillips announced that only two weekends remain for the ASU Farmer’s Market.  Special features this weekend will be a petting zoo and Greg’s band.

 

Len Frey announced that there will be a Business in China symposium at ASU.   The College of Business will also be recognizing their outstanding business executives this weekend.

 

Rob Delaney acknowledged the performances of dance teams from Valley View, JHS, and Nettleton (where his daughter is on the team) at the recent regional competition. 

 

Jay Clevenger’s youngest son won best of show in watercolor at the Fall Festival.

 

Program – Dr. Les Wyatt

 

Dr. Les Wyatt, 10th president of ASU, spoke to the club about the college savings bond extension.  This bond, which will be included on the ballot next month in the general election, will extend a bond that has existed for decades.  The new proposal will provide $150 million to be shared by all 2 and 4 year colleges in the state.   ASU will receive $9 million of this.  All of the funds statewide will be used for academic endeavors.  ASU plans to used the funds to improve technology ($1.5 million to Lambda Rail Project), campus ($4.2 million towards the Chickasaw Building), and programs (College of Business will received matching funds for $1.8 and $1.5 million grants from the Dept. of Commerce).  The funds are expected to be available next spring, with changes on campus to follow next summer.
