Announcements – Optus Senior Tour

On behalf of the club, Jay gave a big thank you to Stephanie and Danny at Sage Meadows, who have helped tremendously with the Optus Tour this week.  Jay has received lots of positive feedback this week regarding the tour.  He needs some volunteers tomorrow (Friday) morning around 7:30am to help ice drinks.  Volunteers are also needed around 11:30am Friday at lunch; players will continue to come in for lunch until around 2:30pm.  Jim Steele will be firing up the BBQ once again.  The JURC high school shootout is this afternoon, so come out if you can.  The winner’s check will be presented on Friday.  Volunteers who will be removing banners need to be at Sage Meadows Saturday morning at 8:00am.

Gary Childers recognized Jay for truly demonstrating “Service Above Self” with all his work related to the golf event.  Gary has contributed significantly, also.

Program – Coach Larry Lacewell

Rotarians who drove a little further this morning to attend the usual meeting were in for a treat.  Jake Morse introduced the “winningest” coach in ASU history, Larry Lacewell, and his wife Chris.  Coach Lacewell spent 11 years at ASU; during that time he coached 37 All American level players.  He is a member of the ASU Ring of Honor and Hall of Honor, as well as Arkansas’s Sports Hall of Fame.  His career included coaching at Alabama, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Dallas.  During his 14 years in Dallas as Director of Personnel, the Cowboys won 3 Super Bowl championships.

Coach Lacewell fondly recalled his “Cinderella” times at ASU, including motivational talks to the team in double-wide trailors and intimidating moments with Coach Bear Bryant.  Throughout his presentation he humbly displayed several pieces of championship jewelry.

Coach Lacewell concluded with some words of advice that he gave his players over the years, including “lose gracefully in the open, but lose bitterly to yourself.”  And, don’t complain.  He will be recognized this weekend on the ASU campus at a reunion for football players who competed during his tenure.

Four Way Test

Rusty led the 4-Way Test: First, Is it the truth, Is it fair to all concerned, will it build goodwill and better friendships, will it be beneficial to all concerned.
