Good News
Miss Jayni Blackburn collected lots of good news Thursday:
***Dr. Joe Stallings along with URCers Dr. Greg Phillips and Dr. Len Frey were going to attend the annual Judd Hill Days on Thursday in Poinsett County. ! Dr. Joe along with the AHEC crew were to perform health screenings at the meeting. The Arkansas Prostate Van would be checking the attendees for PSA and such. The women thought fair was fair.
***Brian Gibson had a Rotary Exchange story to tell: In the past, Brian and Michelle had hosted a French exchange student, Leo, in their home. Well, daughter Mallory, a student at the University of Texas, will be studying and living in Paris for the next 4 months and when things got confused last week in Paris, contact was made with Leo’s family and they came to the rescue. It appears that Mallory has a new place to stay, thanks to Rotary Relationships!
!
***Jay Clevenger told of his son Seth’s experience in getting called out of class by the principal at SAC. Seems Old Man Clark just needed someone to do some stapling for him.
***Josh Fletcher had Rusty to read a letter in his place. The letter was written by a soldier who retired from active duty on May 2, 2006, at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. The letter was written to and about Leslie Fletcher of Indianola, Mississippi, who was this Army veteran’s former scout master. The retired soldier said that he was in charge of training others at Ft. Sill and most of what he later taught was instilled in him by Mr. Fletcher. Josh is really proud of his father. Well said, Josh.
*** Brian Clem reported that wife, Beth, and son, Solomon, are both doing well. The little feller weighed in at 6 lbs., 6 ozs.
Announcements
· Jane Jamison thanked all of the members who signed up to host Super Seniors. There are now enough to run the program for the year. The first Super Senior will be this Thursday, September 7. He is Mark Gibson, son of our own Brian and Michelle Gibson.
· Jay Clevenger said to Sell! Sell! Sell! Those spots for the Optus Senior Tournament coming up in October. It appears the Ball Drop has folded. A sponsor could not be found for the ball drop so it has been dropped. If you know a prospect drop the name to Jay or Jerry Smith.
· Josh Fletcher announced the ever popular Football Picks will kick off this Thursday. There will be 10 games to predict. The last one standing after the bowl games receives a free Pot O Gold ticket. Sign up early and often.
· Nominations are now being accepted for the VOCATIONAL EXCELLENCE AWARD. The award will be given on Thursday, October 26th. Nominations will be accepted through Thursday, September 28th. Jake Morse and Ken Stacks are co-chairs. Contact them for nominations. There will be a meeting of the VEA committee on Sept. 14.
· URC received a big “Thank You” from CASA Director Linda West. URC member Deb Taylor serves on the CASA Board of Directors and sponsored the request for financial help. Our club underwrote the training of a CASA volunteer for about $750.00.
Program
Mike Webb introduced Christy Valentine, faculty member and colleague of Len Frey, of the Arkansas State University College of Business. Christy holds BS and MBA degrees from ASU and returned to campus to teach in the Department of Marketing and Management.&nb! sp; Prior to teaching, Christy was a manager with Phillip Morris USA. She is the mother of a son and daughter and serves as consult to the Delta Center for Economic Development.
Christy’s program was about Internal customer service. It costs businesses 5 X more money to attract new customers than to retain old ones. And the same is true for employees. A tip from Christy: pretend your employees are customers and you will treat them better. Even if one’s operation is a one-person show, you can have a great relationship with the Fed Ex person or the mail carrier or the utility person. Just treat them as a customer and get in that mindset.
Dollars are not always the best m! otivators. Christy told of a businessperson who gave little treats of smoothies to reward his workers. Works good. Develop an ongoing reward system.
The incoming freshmen at ASU were born in 1988. Wow! They are known as Generation Y; or Generation Debt…6 months same as cash; have not distinguished between earning and having. How do we as managers relate to them? We must migrate to their level: they are normally more advanced technically and are fearless of failure. They offer a lot and we will be wiser to let their knowledge work for our operations. They are value-added.
Four Way Test
Jayni Blackburn led the 4-Way Test: First, Is it the truth, Is it fair to all concerned, will it build goodwill and better friendships, will it be beneficial to all concerned.
This Week’s Program
