Program
Greg Phillips hosted the meeting at the Arkansas Biosciences Institute located on the campus of Arkansas State University.  Actually, Greg stood in the first 15 minutes for Carole Cramer who is Director of the program.  Our own Greg is Dean of the College of Agriculture at ASU and the two have done an excellent job in integrating academics and research at ASU.
The ABI came about through the Tobacco Settlement in Arkansas some few years ago.  Some believe that the program at ASU is the crown jewel of the settlement in that ongoing research and tangible results are products of the program.  There are 5 institutions across the state that are involved in the se! ttlement program:  Arkansas Childrens Hospital/Little Rock, U of A Medical Sciences, U of A, U of A Agriculture Research and A.S.U.
Research in the program is spinning off other dividends beside tobacco.  There is industrial as well as pharmaceutical research occurring.  Greg Phillips is researching rice in the area of storage life. Rice has about 1 year of storage shelf life before nutrient breakdown occurs. Corn has about 3 years. Research for ethanol is in play.  All, in all, a very informational program.  Thanks, Greg, for the show and tour.
