Program
Arkansas Attorney General Mike Beebe was introduced to the club by Len Frey.  General Beebe is the 51st AG in Arkansas History.  Prior to serving as AG, Mike served 20 years in the Arkansas Senate where he was past “Senator of the Year.”  MB is an alumni of ASU and was a member of the Board of Trustees, serving as Chair from 1977-79.  He earned a law degree from the University of Arkansas and proclaimed his admiration for both universities as a strong foundation for his life. He is married to Ginger Beebe and resides in Beebe.!   After quizzing our own Paul Holmes about possibly leaving early, Mike expressed that he felt at home in Jonesboro as he went to school with about half of the URC members and probably “bonded out” with the other half.

General Beebe was aboard a tour bus traveling Arkansas and touting jobs and economic development. Some of the topics he spoke about were education, regionalism, private sector-government partnerships, biosciences, alternative fuels, manufacturing, and infrastructures.
Some Questions from URC members:
Q: Lottery.  A.: Upside at the most state will realize about $50 million;  downside, some people will become addicted to the lottery and spend money that they shouldn’t spend.  However, put it to a vote and allow the people to decide at the ballot box
Q: Donn Mixon asked about public education.  (long) A.: There is sufficient money to make the court mandated changes without increasing taxes.  The problems arise when the rules of the game continue to change.  There have been 3 suits and each time the courts have ruled on a different set of guidelines.
Q. Joe Stallings.  Following VP Chaney’s quail hunting mishap during the previous weekend, Joe wondered aloud if all politicians will have to quit bird hunting.  To which General Beebe had no reply and concluded his remarks amidst laughter.
